English as a New Language

The English as a New Language Department of the Hastings-on-Hudson School District provides support to English language learners (ELLs) from a wide variety of linguistic, educational and socio-economic backgrounds, all of which have an impact on their lives and their learning.  We work to strengthen the ties between home and school to ensure families actively participate in the school lives of their children, and so the school community develops a deeper understanding and appreciation of the families with which we work.

Our ENL program is geared towards maximizing each student's educational experience by addressing their linguistic and academic needs and by ensuring that every English language learner has equitable access to all curricular and extra-curricular opportunities. We provide a safe, supportive learning environment with high expectations for each student; our instruction is aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards. Our focus on literacy and academic language of major content areas aims to reduce the achievement gap between English language learners and their native English speaking peers.
