Art Department Philosophy and Goals

The Creative Process

A constant for students at Farragut Middle School is that art lives in the methods and ability to make things, but it also lives in their ideas, successes and failures.  The artistic process is one that constantly blends making and reflecting into a simultaneous act.  Students will try out an idea or a method, and immediately push forward or take a step back.  As they grapple with their failures or successes they will either work towards completion, re-work their piece if necessary and sometimes even rip it all up and start over.  This is how art students engage with their work and their process.

Taking Risks
The essence of art is based on its uniqueness, pure originality and the creation of something that has never been seen before.  It must be new.  To that end, students must be encouraged to take creative risks in all of their work.  They need to feel safe that failure is accepted and in fact is an integral piece of the creative process.  Students’ engagement with materials and ideas must be rooted in the belief that they should be constantly experimenting, always pushing the boundaries and constraints of each assignment and challenging established art making rules.

Concepts, Techniques and Choice
Students are presented with a variety of art making techniques and concepts at FMS.  For each assignment students will always be given the freedom to choose which of these techniques and concepts they want to apply.  Students will always be making decisions about their artwork, and if equipped properly with a variety of tools, they can engage with the materials as they see fit, with a unique approach to each one.
